Enjoy World Migratory Bird Day

Welcome May!

A month of rapid change and renewal, from the continued lengthening of the days providing warmth and energy that leads to the emergence of perennials and leaves on the trees and the migration of birds of all sizes that frantically fuel up as they head north. It’s a month of simply more inviting weather urging us outside to experience all of this activity.

If you haven’t discovered the wonder and joy of bird watching, May is the best time to discover bird activity around us that often goes unnoticed.

A perfect way to start is World Migratory Bird Day on May 9th.

Easy first steps

  • Take an early morning walk through your neighborhood or a local park to observe the sizes, colors, calls, and flight patterns of different birds

  • Download the Merlin Bird ID app that identifies birds by their song and provides a list of those calling in the area of  your walk. It even highlights on the list the specific bird currently calling

  • Refer to additional resources like Cornell Lab of Ornithology or Audubon to learn more about specific birds that catch your attention

  • Check out a local Audubon chapter and events it may host during migration and other times of the year

You’ll be amazed by the number of bird species that often go unnoticed as they pass through in May, and discover favorites that may nest in your neighborhood.

Enjoy the day!
